Spacing between signs
The gap a new sign needs to the next sign on the same side of the road, by Fla. Stat. 479.07(9)(a):
| Road | Gap to the next sign |
|---|---|
| Interstate | 1,500 ft |
| Freeway that isn't an interstate | 1,000 ft |
| Federal-aid primary road | 1,000 ft |
- An interstate gap may drop to 1,000 ft where the local government has a sign-removal plan (479.07(9)(c)).
- Planner check needed: only allowed under a local removal-and-replacement agreement (479.07(9)(c)).
- If the new face goes on the existing permitted sign's own site, as a V-type, back-to-back, stacked or double-faced sign, the spacing rule doesn't stop it (479.07(9)(a)).
- Structure height: up to 50 ft above the road crown outside an incorporated area, and 65 ft inside one (479.07(9)(b)).
- Sign facing: up to 950 sq ft, including embellishments (479.07(9)(b)).
FDOT measures along the edge of the pavement. (Fla. Admin. Code R. 14-10.004)
The 660 ft controlled area
A sign within 660 ft of an interstate or federal-aid primary road's right-of-way needs a state permit. Florida's rule is Fla. Stat. 479.01(5) and 479.07(1).
The federal frame is 23 U.S.C. 131(b)-(d).
